Film director Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider) talks about the practical elements of shooting film in Japan in a video interview presented by Japan House Los Angeles.
Mann directed the pilot episode of Tokyo Vice on location in several areas of Tokyo, beginning in 2020 and wrapping in 2021 after COVID-19 delays. The series, due to premiere on HBO Max, is based on Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan by Jake Adelstein. Co-produced by WOWOW, Tokyo Vice stars Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ansel Elgort.
In Japan House’s recorded seminar, “Transportive Hollywood Power: Film Director Michael Mann on Filming in Japan”, Mann praises the aesthetic virtues of shooting in Tokyo and the precision and craftsmanship of the Japanese cast and crew. The director also offers constructive criticism of Japan’s production incentives and the frustrating delays in getting permissions or clear yes/no answers from municipal offices.
