Umi Shinonome will make her dramatic acting debut in NHK’s historical television drama Unbound (Berabou Tsutaju Eiga no Yume-banashi). The cosplayer and YouTube personality will play the role of Hisa in episode 9, airing March 1.
Starring Ryusei Yokohama, Unbound chronicles the life of Tsutaya Juzaburo (“Tsutaju”), a pioneering 18th-century Edo publisher who rose from poverty to become a major publisher of ukiyo-e art.
In a Sanspo interview, Shinonome reveals how she prepared for the role and customized her look and movement style to match her character’s period lifestyle.
