Naoki Urasawa (author/artist of Yawara!, Monster, 20th Century Boys) has created a portrait of composer Ludwig van Beethoven for Universal Japan’s “Best of Beethoven” CD release, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

Urasawa based the intense imagery on the concept of “Is it possible to convey the charm of Beethoven and the depth of the work to many generations in a new way for the memorial year of the 250th anniversary of birth?”

He added, “Roll over Beethoven! In the next few centuries, the time will come when classical and rock will be viewed together as connected. It’s all great music.”

The prolific manga artist is no stranger to rock star portraits, posting recent sketches of icons David Bowie, ELO’s Jeff Lynne, and of course, Bob Dylan.

Urasawa remarked about his own excitement of seeing the Gramophone label on the new disc. “When I was a kid, I had a collection of Gramophone classical records at my parents’ home. I’m really impressed.”
