Drive My Car, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, has become the first Japanese film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami, the film tells the story of an acclaimed stage actor (Hidetoshi Nishijima) who directs a Hiroshima production of Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya.
In addition, Drive My Car scored nominations for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature. The film, which had a limited run in U.S. theaters, will premiere on HBO Max on March 2.
